Indications for surgery in UPJO

  • Progression of hydronephrosis on serial RBUS
  • Increasing hydronephrosis on follow-up with delayed drainage on renal scan
  • Difference in split function (DFR) of less than 40% in a single kidney and/or 10% decrease in DRF compared to the previous diuretic renograms

Surgical management of UPJO

A pyeloplasty is the surgical intervention for UPJ obstruction and can be performed:

  • using an open procedure (via a small flank incision)
  • minimally invasively (via laparoscopic or robotic-assisted laparoscopy)
