Ureterocele management goals

  • Prevent the renal damage associated with:
    - the obstruction
    - vesicoureteral reflux
    - urinary tract infection.
  • Maintenance of continence
  • Minimize surgical complications with the fewest number of procedures possible

Factors influencing the ureterocele management

  • Presentation of the patient (i.e. antenatally detected or symptomatic)

  • Age of the patient

  • Type of ureterocele (i.e. ectopic or intravesical)

  • The function of each renal segment if associated with a duplex system

  • The presence or absence of reflux in other segments

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
