How to minimize renal infections:

Prompt and adequate antibiotic treatment of renal infection reduces the risk of permanent renal damage (scarring).
A urine culture is needed in order to choose the best drug to treat a renal infection.
Although the duration of treatment is controversial, 10-day treatment is adequate.
Chemioprofilaxis (daily reduced dose of antibiotic for a long period) is rarely recommended.

How to monitor renal infections:

Renal function is usually measured by glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
The most used method to estimate GFR is creatinine clearance (several formulas have been developed).
