What is a Urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) represents the colonization and invasion of the urinary tract by bacteria.

An association between UTIs and kidney and urinary tract abnormalities has long been recognized, particularly when the infections are recurrent or febrile.

  • UTI is the 2nd most common bacterial infection, affecting 7-8% of girls and up to 2% of boys in the first 6 to 10 years of life.
  • UTIs are more frequent in males during the first year of life and girls thereafter.
